COPPELL COPPERHEADS WIN 2007 TCL CHAMPIONSHIP
08/12/2007 10:34 PM
The Coppell Copperheads edged past the McKinney Marshals 2-1 in the nail biting third and final game of the TCL Championship series. With the victory, the Copperheads become the only team in TCL history to win two TCL Championships. Coppell's two-run sixth inning became the deciding frame as Preston Clark's suicide squeeze scored the eventual winning run to propel the Copperheads to their second TCL title.
The Marshals got on the board early in the first inning as Brandon Glover knocked in lead-off hitter Trae Williams on a fielder's choice ground ball to second base to take the early 1-0 lead.
After the first inning run, both McKinney 's and Coppell's starters got in the zone. Coppell's Tim Matthews went 5.2 innings giving up only four hits and striking out four before Mike Bolsinger, who tallied the win, took his place in the top of the fifth. McKinney 's Stephen Richards went 5.1 innings striking out seven.
Richards ran into trouble in the sixth as Brandon Belt knocked in Pat McCrory for the first Coppell run of the night. With the bases loaded, Clark, who was 0-for-7 in the Championship series, came to the plate. Head coach Heath Autry called a suicide squeeze play that work perfectly scoring Sean Jones to put the Copperheads in the lead for the first time.
Coppell then called on hard-throwing reliever Jake McCarter to silence the Marshals bats, and that is exactly what he did. McCarter, who scored the save in game 2, threw two nearly perfect innings striking out three and not allowing a hit.
After McCarter gave up a leadoff walk to Myrio Richard in the top of the ninth, coach Autry pulled McCrory from second base to close the game. Richard, who advanced to second base on a pitch in the dirt, was sacrificed to third on a fly ball to right off the bat of Glover.
With only one out in the ninth and the tying run on third, McCrory proceeded to strike out both Tyler Hohman and Joe Oliviera to seal the 2007 TCL Championship title.
Belt was named TCL Championship Most Valuable Player for his 5-for-11, five RBI performance in the series. |
